Ontario teacher Joanna Johnson thinks the Ontario government plan to ban cellphones and vaping in schools won't be effective or enforceable.By Bruce Froude X screenshot
It took one Ontario teacher only a few hours to tell the world why a ban on the use of cellphones and vaping in Ontario classrooms is a bad idea.

Durham educator Joanna Johnson, who has a large following on her social media account Unlearn16, questions if Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Stephen Lecce considered how difficult it will be for teachers to enforce the cellphone ban.

In a sarcastic three-minute video post, "Out of sight, out of good ideas @Sflecce? Did you even ask a teacher about your complex plan?" Johnson shares how "ill-conceived" and unenforceable the ban will be once it hits the classrooms in September, and she predicts students will quickly find ways to access banned apps like TikTok and Snapchat.

"You will want to sit down and get a pen because it is incredibly intricate and forward-thinking," she said, tongue in cheek, in the first 30 seconds of the video  posted on Sunday, April 28. "I think it is going to blow your mind."

From there, she spends the next three minutes pointing out why the cellphone plan will take a lot of work to enforce.

"This would be brilliant if kids didn't know how to use VPNs (Virtual Private Network) and hot spots" to circumvent the school Wi-Fi restrictions," Johnson explained.

She wraps up her video with suggestions on how best to use cellphones in schools rather than banning them outright.

Regarding vaping, the new rules mean students must hand over any vapes or cigarettes they're caught carrying, after which school staff will notify parents, according to the government.

The Ontario government said social media websites will be removed from all school networks and devices, and report cards will include comments on students' distraction levels in class. It added that teachers will receive mandatory training and that there will be "new supports" for students and parents.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation also questions the thought that went into the plan. "This should actually be a consultation, talking to students, talking to teachers," the federation posted on X.

The recent provincial budget also pledged $30 million over three years for schools to use on things such as security cameras and vape detectors.
